WVVY 93.7 and the Aquinnah Music Festival

Clay cliffs of Aquinnah, on Martha\'s VineyardWVVY’s Aquinnah Music Festival was held July 19th at the circle up at the cliffs on the northwest tip of the island. The Aquinnah circle provides a natural ampitheater carved from the roll of a cliff-side hill, swept by the ocean breezes and the beam from the Gay Head lighthouse. With a view through the back of the stage of waves rolling onto Philbin Beach, the location seemed tailor made for this musical event.

Those who are in the know about good music on the island in a great location made the trip up-island for a day of music. The sun was shining for most of the day, but haze kept the temperature from creeping up too unbearably high. If I had to describe the event as a series of images, I’d say Hula Hoops, children dancing, dust and dancing to Kahoots, many summer dresses, beach umbrellas, blankets on the grass.

WVVY logoWVVY is an independent low-power radio station on Martha’s Vineyard. It cultivates the intimacy of low-power radio in a small tight knit island community, and makes this home-grown intimacy available world-wide through the internet stream. It’s run by a collective of very cool people who believe in independent voices, local artists, and sharing cool music and information. Beyond this, it is also an institution that fosters the development of many of the musicians on the island. That’s a whole other story that is worthy of a blog/documentary of its own.
